A city that had long occupied a quiet omnipresence in my psyche. Through my early childhood, the imagery and news were saturated with the trauma of Berlin coming to terms with a Soviet backed socialist regime that had astounded the world by putting up a wall to separate the population. Footage of individuals making desperate attempts to cross the newly enacted border, jumping from buildings, shredding themselves on the newly erected barbed wire barriers that were going up everywhere brought home to us the utter brutality of a regime that was bent on subjugation of it’s people….YET AGAIN…DSCF2630 DSCF2633 DSCF2647 Berlin is an enigmatic city. It seems full of sweeping vistas. The Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, the river Spree and its environs all conspire to give the city a sense of grandeur and destiny. Names like Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt, President Kennedy’s visit in the sixties when he announce“ Ich bin ein Berlinner” all conspire to imbue the city with significance.DSCF2647 DSCF2649 DSCF2580 DSCF2586 DSCF2601 DSCF2618 All too soon my visit seemed to end. I would like to return and spend more time getting to know the city better.Daniel Liberskind, a so called psychological Architect has created some wonderful spaces for reflection, contemplation embodied in the Jewish museum and public space architecture.
