Arrived here after wonderful time in the Philippine islands. Began by flying from Clark in the Philippines to Singapore on the 29.06.13 then to Kuching in Sarawak Borneo. There one learnt about the daring deeds of the first Sultan of Sarawak in the 1840/50’s. Counter intuitively he was an English man named Edward Brook.

After a career in the East Indies company in the 1830’s he carved out a career for himself and eventually a hundred year dynasty which encompassed his being offered the sultanate by the then Sultan of Berunei, (who, at the time controlled all of Borneo).DSCF3692

After sampling the delights of Kuching, we flew north to Mulu and the National Park at Gudung were we planned on a three day stay. Found some accommodation just outside the park entrance a short walk away. The rain forest was an absolute delight. One trekked through the forest and into caverns of enormous proportions, populated by 3 million nocturnal bats which flew from their roosts within the cavern on their nightly sojourns in their quest for food. We navigated rivers and scrambled over rocks on a voyage of child-like discovery.I can highly recommend a trip to the park.

We left by plane from Mulu to Miri on saturday 06.07.13 on the first part of a journey to the kingdom of Brunei. The capital city Banda seri Beguan is an interesting place that surprisingly needs some finessing.DSCF3760

Left on the 09.07.13 to get to the ferry port at Labuan and thence on to Kota Kinabalu. Unfortunately, had to spend the night on a bench at the airport as taxi services from down town were unreliable and an early morning flight beckoned that one just could not miss!

Got back to London early on the 11.07.13
