Got back to Aukland and spent a night with friends “Miles and Nolene”, who kindly drove us to the airport the following day, where a flight to the Kingdom of Tonga beconed. After a four hour flight north, landed at Nuku Alofa.DSCF8850

Booked accommodation at Toni’s guest house in the capital Tongatapu. Amazingly, Toni is a lancastrian, so it was really weird speaking to a guy in the same dialect on a far flung Pacific island.DSCF9014

Took a two day ferry ride 150 miles north to a tiny archipeligo called VaVa’u where the visual image of South Pacific island life really comes to the fore. Life here is a daily litany of languid easy living, where the notion of “rush and expediency” simply do not exist. It is kinda weird how it takes a couple of days for this pace to compute and for your metabolism to come to terms with the new “sl—–o—-w” way of doing things. The sunshine really does give the illusion that one is smiling, all the time, if only as a reaction to the suns glare.

Sadly…will be leaving before the Southern Right Wales come north to nurture their young and present an opportunity to swim with them.
