So…..1660 kilometres in 19 hours & 2300 meters increase in altitude would get us first to Calama & then a day trip back to, Antofagasta. There we hoped to see the largest ‘open cast’ copper mine in the world [at the time of writing].
From Calama, we continued to San Pedro de Atacama, from where we hoped to book a 3 day trip across the desert to Uyuni in Bolivia.
San Pedro d’Atacama, would be our ‘jump off point’ for the Alto Plano d’Atacama & ultimately Uyuni, in three days time. There were 14 people in three Nissan 4 wheel drives going to make the trip. The topography, scenery, flora & fauna were amazing, encompassing a ‘dip’ in a heated pool! The Alto Plano originates in northwest of Lake Titicaca in southern Peru & extends about 600 mile (965km) southeast to the southwestern corner of Bolivia. The elevation is 3,750 meters (12,300feet).
The distance, plateau, light and sky, all conspire to make perspective….irrelevant!
Out on the plain a surprise awaits. A ‘Locomotive Graveyard’ in the middle of nowhere!
Ultimately, we reach Uyuni & an amazing Pizza cooked by an American x-pat & a more comfortable bed for the night.
