Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay:Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden JubileeCelebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island.

Two cable car rides to get up here.

The Sky bridge is definitely worth a visit as it provides beautiful vistas over the forest canopy and beyond.

Time was pressing as we needed to get down to the bottom of peninsular Malaysia  and then cross the border into the  Republic of Singapore.

Taking the fast ferry back to George Town and jumping  onto  an overnight sleeper bus headed south crossing into the Republic of  Singapore on the 03.12.2011 at 08 am.

Abiding by our plan, we resolved to leave the Cameron Highland and head on down to George Town via Ipo.

George Town is located in Peninsula Malaysia

George Town  on  Pingang island was established by Captain Francis Light on behalf of the British East India Company in 1786. He acquired the property from the Sultan of Kedah as a staging post on the Malay Straits for the company.

Arriving early evening, we had booked at the Chulia Heritage Hotel. Chulia Heritage Hotel Penang - StaircaseVery pleasant. Unusually it appeared to be perhaps a refurbished old warehouse that had been decorated largely using white as the base colour scheme.Chulia Heritage Hotel Penang - Triple Room with Shared Bathroom We stayed a couple of days exploring the delights of Chulia Street and the surrounding “bijou” neighborhood and found it to be quite appealing.

We caught a fast ferry out to Langkawi island.

“We do not believe any group of men adequate enough or wise enough to operate without scrutiny or without criticism. We know that the only way to avoid error is to detect it, that the only way to detect it is to be free to inquire. We know that in secrecy error undetected will flourish and subvert”. - J Robert Oppenheimer.
